STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AND ENJOY THE SPIRIT OF MUSIC – Interview with Michel Montecrossa

Michel Montecrossa answers questions of a Bob Dylan aficionado. This interview is released for the first time in relation with the release of ‘FIRE ON THE WATER’ – the Michel & Bob Dylan Fest 2018

Q: How did your obsession with Bob Dylan begin? Do you remember the first song or album you heard?

Michel Montecrossa:
No obsession ever began. I heard a musician-artist who is in touch with the archetypal Spirit of music and word and it is this Spirit that interests me. The first song performed by Bob Dylan I heard was ‘Song to Woody’ and the first album I heard was his first album.

Q: When did you decide to cover every Dylan song? Was that the plan from the beginning, or did you realize at some point you had already covered so many you might as well do the full batch?

Michel Montecrossa:
One day in 1993 a man came to one of my concerts and asked me if I would play a Bob Dylan song for him. I had never before played a Bob Dylan song but I did it for this man. It was ‘All Along The Watchtower’. Later he now and then asked for more Bob Dylan songs as did other people because they liked the way I performed Bob Dylan songs. These demands continued to come in till today so that after a while it became the full batch. I myself never took a decision to cover every Dylan song.

Q: Which specific songs were the hardest to cover? Which were the easiest?

Michel Montecrossa:
There is no specific song that’s hard or easy to cover. I do not think in terms of covering something but rather of feeling something and if I have enough feelings in me there is nothing hard or easy.

Q: Is there a general trend between what makes a Dylan song easy or hard to play (length, number of words, chord changes, etc)?

Michel Montecrossa:
No general trend. It’s as I said a question of having the wideness to feel without walls.

Q: What are the challenges with covering some of his very obscure songs? In some cases, you seem to be the first person to ever cover them!

Michel Montecrossa:
No challenges up to now. His songs come in their own ways with their own stories. Obscure or not don’t play a role.

Q: On the other side, how do you go about making the songs that get covered constantly (Blowin’ in the Wind, Watchtower, etc) your own?

Michel Montecrossa:
The entry door for every song whether it is called ‘my own’ song or a ‘Bob Dylan’ song is openness to the Spirit of music I mentioned before. Something like ‘my, his, hers’ don‘t really exist.

Q: Are there songs that you ended up liking more after you covered them? For instance, maybe a song you weren’t that excited about doing, but then when you had to learn to play it, you appreciated it in a new way.

Michel Montecrossa:
I don’t cover songs by anyone, not even my own songs. It’s all about feeling Joy and Laughing and that I appreciate always in a new way. There is no ‘liking’ or ‘disliking’.

Q: Do you have a favorite Dylan album? A least favorite?

Michel Montecrossa:
I favor them all in the place for which they stand.

Q: Is there a lesser-known Dylan song you think that more people should cover?

Michel Montecrossa:
I think it is the song Bob Dylan has not written as yet.

Q: Have you ever heard from anyone in Bob’s camp about your project?

Michel Montecrossa:
As yet I don’t know where such a camp is. I can’t answer the question. I only know that Bob Dylan himself said that I can perform any and all of his songs.

Q: Can you tell me a little more about your annual Michel & Bob Dylan Fest? For instance: How did that start, and when? Why did you decide to do this series of concerts? I gather many/most of your Dylan covers have been performed and release in that context.

Michel Montecrossa:
The annual Michel & Bob Dylan Fest started in 2001 as a result of people asking me always more to sing and play Bob Dylan songs as they like my way of performing them. The resulting live recordings then made their way into releases.

Q: What advice do you have for other musicians who want to cover Dylan?

Michel Montecrossa:
Don’t cover Dylan but stay true to yourself and enjoy the Spirit of music.

CyberRock Tuesday, part 95 – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan, part 45

Today’s CyberRock Tuesday presents songs from ‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’ – read here about the album (Audio-CD & DVD) and download it here from iTunes.

‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’ is released by Mira Sound Germany on Audio-CD, DVD and as Download celebrating the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Bob Dylan “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” 10th December 2016 (followed by Bob Dylan’s acceptation of the Nobel Prize for Literature in April 2017) in Stockholm, Sweden. The ‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’ presents the outstandingly revealing performances of 8 Bob Dylan songs, 1 Robbie Robertson song and 3 Michel Montecrossa songs all played by Michel Montecrossa and his band The Chosen Few including Bob Dylan’s legendary songs ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’, ‘Chimes Of Freedom’ and ‘I’ll Keep It With Mine’ as well as Robbie Robertson’s ‘Golden Feather’ and Michel Montecrossa’s ‘Another Morn’.
Robbie Robertson for many years played guitar for Bob Dylan and was an important co-creator of the typical band sound that accompanied Bob Dylan’s song music on its way to international fame. The song ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ which is the opening song of the ‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’ was also performed as the opening of the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. On that occasion it was sung by Patti Smith. Michel Montecrossa’s orchestral interpretation of ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ is based on Bob Dylan’s own orchestral version of the song which he staged during the ‘Great Music Experience Festival’ 1994 in Japan.

Movie: DVD-Preview of ‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’

Michel Montecrossa says about the ‘Bob Dylan Nobel Prize Special – Michel Montecrossa sings Bob Dylan and Himself’:
“I see the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 to Bob Dylan (followed by Bob Dylan’s acceptation of the Nobel Prize for Literature in April 2017) as an historical cultural event which not only honors the written side of literature but also highlights the dimension of the art of song-poetry fusion which in fact is much older than written literature and in the future is ever more bound to gain a mind-staggering planetary importance for the growth of human intelligence and expansion of consciousness experience.”

Bob Dylan says in his statement for the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony (read out by the United States Ambassador to Sweden Azita Raji):
“Well, I’ve been doing what I set out to do for a long time, now.
I’ve made dozens of records and played thousands of concerts all around the world. But it’s my songs that are at the vital center of almost everything I do. They seemed to have found a place in the lives of many people throughout many different cultures and I’m grateful for that.
Not once have I ever had the time to ask myself, “Are my songs literature?”
So, I do thank the Swedish Academy, both for taking the time to consider that very question, and, ultimately, for providing such a wonderful answer.
My best wishes to you all.”

Michel Montecrossa says about ‘The Michel & Bob Dylan Fest 2012 in Mirapuri’:
“The origin of the ‘Michel & Bob Dylan Fest Series’ was a man asking me if I could sing a Bob Dylan song in my next concert. I fulfilled his wish. After that I was asked ever more to include Bob Dylan songs in my concerts, as people said they like my way of singing Bob Dylan songs and they like to hear them together with my own songs as a positive and stimulating experience. Out of that the ‘Michel & Bob Dylan Fest Series’ evolved, beginning in 2001 and the ‘The Michel & Bob Dylan Fest 2012′ is the 12th time that it happened. It includes my own new songs as well as Bob Dylan songs from 1961 till 2012. The opening song ‘Talking Big Festival Waves’ I wrote for celebrating in 2012 the 20th birthday of the Spirit of Woodstock Festival in Mirapuri, the City of Peace and Futureman in Europe, Italy. It is followed by a Bob Dylan song from 1961 ‘East Orange, New Jersey’, of which I only found the lyrics so that I composed my own tune for it. Some of the other Bob Dylan songs are co-written by Bob Dylan with other musicians like Bono from U2 (‘Love Rescue Me’), Helena Springs (‘Coming From The Heart’, ‘The Wandering Kind’), Michael Bolton (‘Steel Bars’), Tom Petty (‘Jammin’ Me’) and George Harrison from the Beatles (‘I Don’t Want To Do It’). ‘You Belong To Me’ is a 1952 monster hit by Chilton Price with some participation of Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart which was covered by Bob Dylan and used for the soundtrack of the 1994 movie ‘Natural Born Killers’. ‘The Love That Faded’ is a song composed by Bob Dylan for the lyrics with the same title by Hank Williams. The other tracks are Bob Dylan originals including rarities like ‘Jesus Is The One’, ‘Trouble In Mind’, ‘I Will Love Him’ and more. My own brands include New-Topical-Songs like ‘Don’t Cheat’, ‘Bouncin’! (With Gangsta Bankas And Corrupto Politos)’, ‘Try It Harder All Ye Helpless Leaders! Try It Harder!’, ‘Damn Hot – The Vision Of Balance’, ‘Cyberrocker Morfin’ U’, ‘Love & Unity Dance’, ‘Coffee And Sandwich Blues’ and many more.”
